Through her work, the artist explores the omniscient and omnipresent nature of the internet: “Literally all this at my fingertips, and I feel so knowing, so deep. ">7-9pm at the Fardom Gallery.

Fardom Gallery is pleased to announce our second solo-exhibition of new works by Chris Harris. The artist’s latest body of work, Shelta Sings Wrapped in the Arms of Wilaye Fynd, centers around the theme of home and the kinetic instincts that crystallize into its parts. His work here begins with the act of “performing” within simple constructions while using photography to begin a process of building. The creative process is then extended and inverted by designing and building structures to house the actions. Inversion is a constant presence in his work as he sees it as essential to growth and therefore essential to life. For instance the title itself refers to two personified directionally different ideas, Shelta (shelter) and Wilaye Fynd (will I find?), which are brought together by acting contradictory to their nature.

Along one wall is a series of large black-and-white prints, titled Partners, housed in deep shadow boxes with legs that allow them to sit on the ground while holding the image at eye level. They lean stoically against the wall but the handles under the frame seem to be inviting you to dance. The images too seem to alternate between dark and playful. All of the still photographs in the exhibit are prints from a single negative but the video portrait, 1000, is built from a group of photographs that are digitally made to undulate over top one another. Included in the show, as a counter point to the images of himself, is a leather bound book of color photos Harris took of various people in his life, be they friends, family members, lovers or briefly encountered strangers, all shot with a 6x6 medium format camera and cropped to an image that is 9x10inches, an aspect ratio that sits heavily on the eye. The title of the series, I Will Take All of You With Me, is intended to be as much of a memento mori as it is a call to those around him to join him in life. It’s that “art is life plus death” notion that guides much of Harris’ work. While evocative of both the dark sensuality of Mark Morrisroe and the roving sun-soaked sweetness of Jack Pierson’s photography, Harris here seems to be attempting to resolve something very personal. He will continue this particular series until he no longer can.

Chris Harris (b. 1982, Portland, Maine) currently lives and works in New York City. He has a background in dance, theater, painting and clothing construction. Fardom Gallery, part of The Space collective, is dedicated to maintaining and expanding the artistic community in the Long Island City, Queens area. The Space takes advantage of previously underutilized property in Long Island City, New York, to provide work space for artists, and a venue for community involvement in the arts, and works with developers and planners to ensure that there are affordable places for artists to live and work in Long Island City as our neighborhood develops and grows.

For further information about the artist contact Kristin Reger at 773.396.8812 or via email at <a href="mailto:kristinreger@gmail.com" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(0, 137, 170); The aim is to bring forth the process, highlight the studio aspect, and enjoy sloppy before structure. The gallery is vaguely polished in the front room, studio style in the back, and over the next 4 weeks will morph from studio to show.* These two months I will share with everyone along the way my process in making art, how to present an artist and what it takes to make a full show. The preview of "Dessert First" will be tonight! 7-9 (sorry for the late notice Facebook world!) The Opening Reception will be the first friday of next month.

Everyone is welcome this evening to the Preview. Rather than all the formalities of an opening reception, and the hustle for food and wine today, The path is clear for friends to come over and just chat, relax, and check it out. Bring what you want, who you want, and I look forward to seeing you guys at what will prove to be, seriously, the most casual First Friday seen yet.
Rock the Free World,

KELLY STURHAHN

SOL KJØK

Long Island City, NY – The Space (Fardom Gallery) is pleased to present a female group show exploring the human consciousness that exists in-between our sleep and wake states of mind. Bedtime Stories, Monotone Dreams curated by Helen Homan Wu, opens on April 9th and runs through May 2nd, 2010. Bedtime Stories will present works in various media by six contemporary female artists, both national and international, ranging from Kelly Sturhahn’s mirrors and reflections to Aliona Yurtsevich’s intricate sound compositions.

We all have at one time or another, been paralyzed during our sleep. Modern science calls it Sleep Paralysis and eliminates any possibility of it being linked to a different realm. In truth, the reality of each experience is relative and unique to the sleeper. This in-between state of consciousness is a phenomenal experience that calls for attention. For an artist, it is an inspirational moment of truth that for an average folk often it gets ignored.

Katja Loher, born in Basel, Switzerland, now based in Brooklyn, NY, will draw the viewer into her medley of universes from videos projections in sculptural objects. Carissa Pelleteri’s nostalgic stills taken from super 8 footage, feel almost as if you have been pulled into someone’s lost memory. Working with the media of traditional lines, Sol Kjøk explores the human form in every possible angle, embedded with it are deep questions about existentialism. Kelly Sturhahn tells her story in a set/stage-like manner with deliciously dark installations that has romantic notions at first glance, but on close inspection reflects another dimension. Chaw Ei Thien’s site-specific piece – The Bed – is not to be missed. Her choice of materials directly reflects the moment in flux, something so beautiful that can decay into ugliness within a blink of an eye. Inspired by technology, data bits, and nature, Aliona Yurtsevich will present an abstract composition that evokes sounds of the soul, dreams, lost memories, desires, fear, hope, movement, and emotional stillness.

Fardom Gallery, part of The Space collective, is conceived by Long Island City artist and current Space executive director Kristy Schopper. She is dedicated to maintaining and expanding the artistic community in the Long Island City, Queens area. The Space takes advantage of previously underutilized property in Long Island City, New York, to provide work space for artists, and a venue for community involvement in the arts, and works with developers and planners to ensure that there are affordable places for artists to live and work in Long Island City as our neighborhood develops and grows

Schopper, Director of L.I.C. arts organization the Space, has been supporting local artists for ten years, tirelessly organizing and promoting the efforts of the community she's taken under her wing. She's asked for little in return, primarily insisting that the artists she supports also support each other. As a result, she has helped to grow a thriving group of painters, sculptors, photographers, and performers. Throughout her life as an administrator, she has made sure to maintain herself as the artist she was when this all began. I'm not sure where she found the energy, but she kept painting, developing the body of work in escap: works by Kristina A. Schopper.

This Friday, August 7th at 7:00, escap will open with a two-hour reception at the Space's Fardom Gallery, where Ms. Schopper is showing selected paintings. At 9:00, the party will move to the Space's warehouse property, where the organization's artist studios have been temporarily transformed into a generous showcase of Schopper's past work. Her paintings are highly tactile, vivid atmospheres in color and form, brimming over with as much personality as their lively creator. Now would be a good time to introduce yourself to this grassroots queen; one day you're going to want to say "I met her."

More information, as well as directions to the properties, are at the Space's website.

AFFORDABLE STUDIOS IN NEW YORK!

STUDIOS AVAILABLE!

Colossus)
The Space’s proposal for the Long Island City Colossus will include sketches, models, a timeline and a budget for building a giant sculpture off the shores of Queens. The LIC Colossus is to be built in the image of the mythical Colossus of Rhodes: a giant human form emerging from the depths of the East River. However, unlike the traditional image of a Colossus, this male figure will be built only from the waist up, creating a design that can only be seen at low tide. The colossus will serve as a reminder of Long Island City’s foundation as an industrial fortress and transmit across the waters ever growing artistic and cultural strength in New York City’s other city.

(World Tour)
60’s Berlin. 70’s São Paulo. Perpetual Detroit. Often, cities in destitution double as underground cultural epicenters. Can this phenomenon be cultivated in the neglected inner-city? Municipalities like Amsterdam and Buenos Aires think so; we do too. The Space proposes an around the world art tour to share our skills in many a city. Taking cues from our successes in Queens, Chashama’s example in Manhattan, and the Phantom Gallery Network in Chicago, artists-cum-activists will work city-by-city holding rogue exhibitions, performances, and workshops. Artists will land in a city and collaborate with civic planners, institutions, and real estate companies to secure vacant properties for artist’s work and community outreach in underdeveloped/ unattractive areas. Working with local artists will be key in ensuring cultural exchange and sustaining program momentum once touring artists have left. Artists will work to demonstrate that waiting real estate can be utilized by artists in the interim, thereby creating community-level incentive for public and private development. The US would serve as the launch pad; dream itinerary would include fringe areas in Mexico City, Moscow and Marrakech. Exhibited materials will include a personalized plans for international cities with maps focusing on particular areas of each metropolis.
Audacity of Art Show:
Opening Reception April 24th. 7pm.
CoProsperity Sphere
Somewhere South Morgan
Bridgeport Chicago USA

ShelterCorps
Building things in which to stay/live/meditate/ascend. The Space strives to not only preserve Long Island City’s heritage as an artistic stronghold, but also to foster its continuous development through a variety of programs. The space recognizes the impact of the arts as cultural capital and diffuses this ‘product’ to greater New York City, forming the foundation for a sustainable artistic community.

Providing logistic support for artists and community projects is the main goal of The Space. This includes renovating underutilized spaces for use as artists' studios and show venues; developing affordable housing for artists; and coordinating cultural events, educational workshops, and beautification projects to benefit the Long Island City community.

The Space thanks the Modell Family, the Arthur Levine Foundation, and the Mathis-Pfohl Foundation for their generous support.

To learn more, please visit licspace.org
