TheSPACE L.I.C. presents:
(L.I.C. Colossus)
The Space’s proposal for the Long Island City Colossus will include sketches, models, a timeline and a budget for building a giant sculpture off the shores of Queens. The LIC Colossus is to be built in the image of the mythical Colossus of Rhodes: a giant human form emerging from the depths of the East River. However, unlike the traditional image of a Colossus, this male figure will be built only from the waist up, creating a design that can only be seen at low tide. The colossus will serve as a reminder of Long Island City’s foundation as an industrial fortress and transmit across the waters ever growing artistic and cultural strength in New York City’s other city.
(World Tour)
60’s Berlin. 70’s São Paulo. Perpetual Detroit. Often, cities in destitution double as underground cultural epicenters. Can this phenomenon be cultivated in the neglected inner-city? Municipalities like Amsterdam and Buenos Aires think so; we do too. The Space proposes an around the world art tour to share our skills in many a city. Taking cues from our successes in Queens, Chashama’s example in Manhattan, and the Phantom Gallery Network in Chicago, artists-cum-activists will work city-by-city holding rogue exhibitions, performances, and workshops. Artists will land in a city and collaborate with civic planners, institutions, and real estate companies to secure vacant properties for artist’s work and community outreach in underdeveloped/ unattractive areas. Working with local artists will be key in ensuring cultural exchange and sustaining program momentum once touring artists have left. Artists will work to demonstrate that waiting real estate can be utilized by artists in the interim, thereby creating community-level incentive for public and private development. The US would serve as the launch pad; dream itinerary would include fringe areas in Mexico City, Moscow and Marrakech. Exhibited materials will include a personalized plans for international cities with maps focusing on particular areas of each metropolis.
